My Kids’ Lunch: Watermelon, Nectarines & More

I wish I could say my kids were more adventurous with their eating habits. But they’re not. So – as long as I can get a veggie or two, a fruit or two, some protein and a grain, I’m okay with it.

We sort of live by the 80/20 rule in our house. As long as 80% of what they eat is decent, I’m cool with 20% being not-so-decent. (Life is just too friggin short to not eat pizza and ice cream). I also try to remember that if they have an unbalanced lunch or dinner, it’s not the end of the world. What’s more important is to focus on the balance they’re getting over the course of a week.

So this lunch wasn’t super-nutrient dense and was missing a grain – which I heard about at the end of the day… “Mommy – I wanted a muffin in my lunch today. There was no muffin. Why, Mommy? Why would you do this to me?”  Okay, so maybe she wasn’t that dramatic. But, overall, they ate all their lunch and came home happy.

What more could a Mom want, right?

Today’s Lunch:

  • Watermelon cubes (this will be our last watermelon for the season… parting is such sweet sorrow)
  • Nectarine slices
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Hummus to dip
  • Rice crackers
  • Plain greek yogurt with chocolate chips on top
