My Kids’ Lunch: Hemp Meatballs & More

Processed with Snapseed.

This morning started out well. I woke up. Worked out. Got the endorphins going. The kids all woke up in a good mood.

Then things took a turn for the worse.

First, nobody would listen to me – which actually isn’t that out of the norm for a weekday morning. But today, it made my blood start boiling. I can only say ‘brush your teeth’ and ‘put on underwear, please!!!’ so many times before I start to feel myself growing grey hairs.

After we finally made it out the door, my 6-year old spent the entire walk to school complaining that she was cold. So what did I do? I zipped up her jacket for her – like a nice Mom.

Only… I zipped up some of her chin skin in the process.

And that was pretty much it. Pure catastrophe. There was no coming back from that one.

The only thing that kept me from a complete spiral into Mom guilt was that I packed them a decent lunch today.

Here’s what they’re having:

  • Cucumber sticks and orange pepper slices
  • Hummus for dipping
  • Apple and sunbutter ‘sandwiches’ – I take sunbutter and slather it on cut up pieces of apple and then put them together so it’s not too messy in the lunch box
  • Cheerios and chocolate chips – for a treat
  • Hemp seed-infused meatballs – (That sounds so foodie doesn’t it??) That’s just my way of saying we put hemp seeds into your run-of-the-mill meatball recipe
  • Banana bread pieces

Instead of meatballs for my vegetarian kid, she got some extra veggies (carrot sticks) and a bit of plain yogurt with a touch of maple syrup to sweeten it.

What are you guys having today?
